image

Breastfeeding can be very fulfilling and at the same time exhausting. Breastfeeding has a significant impact on the present and future health and well-being of your baby because this is a critical period of growth, it also offers the chance to bond with baby and this is why breastfeeding us strongly encouraged. Here are a few tips to help in breastfeeding.
1) proper positioning is very important. Sit upright with your legs elevated by  using a stool or with the use of nursing pillows.

2) When feeding in the sitting-up position your back should be upright and at a right angle to your lap.

3) The baby should come to the breast not the breast to the baby I.e  the baby is coming up to your breast at the same angle as your breast is coming down to him, this prevents you straining your back.

4) Early feeding is important contributes to the success of breastfeeding but 1st feed should depend on the needs of the baby.

5) The more you breastfeed the better you get, remember practice makes perfect.

6) Breastfeeding is learned not an instinct, so don’t feel bad the first time if you don’t  get it right.

7) The baby feeds from the breast not the nipple , hence, ensure the mouth covers the whole nipple and areola.

8) Ensure latching is done appropriately to avoid sore nipples or cracked nipples.

9) Appropriate latching determines the quality and quantity of milk your baby gets. The baby would require frequent feedings to get sufficient milk if latching is not appropriately done.

10) Some mothers feel uncomfortable about breastfeeding because they are modest or may feel embarrassed breastfeeding in public, this should not stop you from breastfeeding you can use nursing covers, with nursing covers you get to be modest and breastfeed.

11) You can break feeds by putting a finger into a corner of the baby’s mouth.

12) If you are leaking milk you can use nursing pads inside your bra(which wet pads should be changed frequently) or you can go for printed tops to camouflage small leaks.

13) Did you know you can condition your nipples? This can be done by expressing a few drops of milk after feeding, massage it gently into the skin of the nipple and areola and allow to air-dry.

14) breastfeeding can be stressful. Take advantage of baby’s sleep time to catch up on sleep. You could also put baby in side-lying position to breastfeed and you can catch some sleep in the process.

15) Breastfeeding should not hurt, if you experience any pain on your nipples or soreness see your midwife.

The fit preggo: eating for two

So today is about eating for two people. I know you are thinking your food quantity would be doubled and you get to eat as much as you want (every girls dream) under the umbrella of “I am pregnant”am sorry but my eating for two is in relation to quality and not quantity.

image

Being underweight in pregnancy is bad for you and baby, can lead to low birth weight and being Overweight too is bad for you and baby and can lead to gestational diabetes or cesearean birth.Achieving optimal weight gain in pregnancy is the goal. Am sure you are wondering how can I avoid all these complications, it all starts with you.

image

pre-pregnancy weight is very important. If you are not pregnant and you are planning to ensure your weight for height(Body mass index ) is within the range of 18-25, and if you are pregnant already you should still know your pre-pregnancy weight. If your BMI is below 18 (underweight) your diet has to be altered, your caloric intake would be doubled and above 25(overweight) caloric intake may be reduced to avoid adding more weight.
Focus more on the quality of food you are taking not the quantity . you will need to adopt healthy eating habits. Eat lots of leafy vegetables and fruits ensure you eat foods from all classes of food from proteins to carbohydrates to minerals and consume lots of water you will need to be well hydrated.
Engage in physical activity of at least 30 minutes a day , take short walks.
Also ensure you take your supplements being recommended at the antenatal clinic such as folic acid .  The most important thing is to ensure you eat and get all the nutrients you can and avoid dieting this is not the time to diet.
I hope this would be helpful.

Movie Review: DRY by Stephanie Linus

image

So I watched the movie DRY by Stephanie Linus(formerly known as Stephanie okereke) a Nigerian actress. The movie I must confess is really good and it depicts so many factors influencing maternal and child mortality in Nigeria most of which are preventable, the struggles and pains of women daily. It depicts factors such as :
– lack of access to good medical care .
– lack of access to education .
– poverty .
-child bride problems such as vesico vaginal fistula .
– The nonavailability of skilled midwives or birth attendants (people would rather use the traditional birth attendants that lack the needed knowledge and skills for safe childbirth).
– the inability of women to take responsibility for their reproductive health. There are cases in which the mother in-law or husband decides the reproductive health for their wives such as family planning .
-also physical abuse to women which is one issue in which there is increasing awareness for .

image

Believe it or not these things happen everyday and it is disheartening to know that some of these factors are nor so far fetched among literates (such as child bride) . Nigerians are greatly influenced by culture and religion , but we need to know when to draw the line (such as running to the church to deliver when indicated for cesearean section) , spirituality is highly encouraged in health  cause it helps individuals mentally but we need to draw the line and know when to seek health care the earliar you seek healthcare the better the chances of survival.

image

The movie not only shows the health issues but also the social and mental impacts (such as suicidal ideations) of these things and how women suffer. I must confess I cried at some point because I was touched  by the movie and I decided that I would share this with everybody I can reach out to. It is possible to reduce vesico vaginal fistula and maternal and child mortality in Nigeria, we also have our roles to play seek healthcare early. Kudos to Stephanie Linus on this movie.
Please read, share and watch the movie , your opinions count please make a  comment.

10 reasons why you should exercise.

image

Like my previous post on the “fit preggo” It was about exercising in pregnancy and basic exercises you could carry out. Today I want to give you reasons why you should exercise in pregnancy . so here are ten reasons why you should exercise during pregnancy:
1) it helps you to maintain a healthy weight .
2) it helps to reduce common disorders of pregnancy.
3) it helps in better glucose utilization by increasing insulin sensitivity  I.e it reduces the risk of gestational diabetes.
4) improved fetal(baby) growth.
5) it can help to shorten labour and delivery  time .
6) it improves body awareness, balance , coordination and posture.
7) it helps to improve blood circulation and reduces diastolic blood pressure, reducing the risk of pregnancy induced hypertension.
8) it also increases endurance and stamina.
9) it helps to prevent slow and unprogressive labour.
10) last but not the least , exercise helps to improve mood.

The fit preggo: basics of exercise in pregnancy

image

Exercise does a lot of wonders during pregnancy and  with lots of benefits to the expectant mother. Exercise improves mood (which I can attest to), sleep and helps to relieve aches and pain . Exercising and staying active during pregnancy  makes it much easier to get in shape after your baby is born. The main aim of exercise in pregnancy should be to maintain or slightly improve your level of fitness provided there are no contraindications. There are some basic things you should know about about exercising in pregnancy:
1) you should not undertake new vigorous exercise , which could make you too warm, tired or breathless.
2) if you a regular exerciser it is advisable to reduce the intensity and duration of your training as pregnancy progresses.
3) when you exercise you should maintain a moderate level of exercise( a moderate level is that intensity which can be maintained while able to carry out a conversation).
4) 30 minutes or more of moderate exercise a day on most, if not all, days of the week is recommended in pregnancy.

image

Some basic exercises that can be done include swimming (it makes you feel very light).
-walking .
-gym based exercises such as static bicycle, treadmill.
– Energetic sports like jogging , cycling, dancing .
N.b : sports that pose a potential threat to your safety and that of your baby should be avoided.

So if you thinking of what exercise to do and you not sure just turn on your favorite playlist and dance for 30 minutes or take a walk , you would be glad you did.

Relieving sleep discomforts in pregnancy

There are several discomforts that come with pregnancy such as heartburn, backache and discomforts with sleeping. Sleeping becomes more uncomfortable when the bump grows bigger, breathing becomes a little bit more difficult and finding a comfortable sleeping position is of great concern to any preggo. Adequate sleep is quite essential during pregnancy, I came across something that can relieve these discomforts.  It is called a pregnancy pillow some call it body pillow. Pregnancy pillows are quite wonderful as they give optimal comfort. However, choosing the right pregnancy pillow is quite important .
Choosing a good pregnancy pillow is dependent on your height and the purpose for which it would be used. These pillows also help to relieve backache and can be used after pregnancy as a breastfeeding pillow.

There are four basic types of pregnancy pillows. The C-shaped , J-shaped, U-shaped and the wedge shaped pillows. In choosing your pillow the discomfort you want to relieve is of utmost importance , if you have backaches  the C-shaped pillow can be used as it provides comfort to the back , it supports the head and shoulders at the top and support for the legs at the bottom .

image

The U-shaped pillow is quite my favorite as it provides support to the back and the bump at the same time, it elevates the upper body which helps to make breathing easier during sleep.

image

The J-shaped pillow provides comfort to the back and the head
The wedge shaped pillow is usually used in conjunction with other pillows as additional support. The beauty of these pillows is that you can use them however you like.

image

You might not see the relevance of the pillows in your first trimester but in your  third trimester you would be glad you got one. You should consider getting one today.

A Nigerian lady and her contraceptive

image

Contraception is the order of the day and some might be wondering what is contraception?? Well…. Contraception or also known as family planning is the deliberate use of artificial methods or other techniques to prevent pregnancy as a consequence of sexual intercourse. Women have a lot of misconceptions about contraception which prevents them from using them, such as using the the pills can cause infertility which isn’t true . Before choosing a contraception plan you need to consider some factors such as age, health status, how soon you want to have a baby , frequency of sexual activity and the comfort of you using the contraception also for mothers breastfeeding you need to consider a contraception plan that won’t disturb breastfeeding.
There are a lot of contraceptive methods to choose from just ensure you choose the type that is convenient and suitable to use.
The major forms of contraception are the:  1) barrier methods
These includes condoms both male and female ,diaphragms, cervical caps  and this method basically blocks the sperm from entering the uterus.

image

Spermicidal cream or jelly can be used with the diaphragms. Condoms help to protect against pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections , no matter the contraception plan I always advice to use condoms with the other form of contraception because of STI’s.

2) Hormonal methods
It involves the use of hormones to stop ovulation and hence prevent pregnancy. Ovulation is the biological process in which the ovary releases an egg , making it available for fertilization. Hormones can be released into the body through pills, injections, implantable rods. Depending also on the type of hormones used these pills prevent ovulation, or thicken cervical mucus which prevents the sperm from  reaching the egg or thin the lining of the uterus . examples are the combined oral contraceptives (the pill) or the progestin only pills(mini pills), injectables and emergency contraceptive pills.

image

3) Intrauterine methods
An IUD  is a small T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It is inserted with the help of a healthcare provider. An IUD can remain and function effectively for many years and can last for as long as ten years. After the recommended length of time a health care provider removes or replaces the device. Examples include a copper IUD and mirena ( hormonal IUD).

image

4) sterilization method
There is also the sterilization method which is a permanent form of birth control that either prevents a woman from getting pregnant or prevents a man from releasing a sperm. It must be done by a health care provider. They include vasectomy, tubal ligation and sterilization implant .

There are so many choices to make, you should however seek your healthcare provider in helping you to choose the contraceptive method that suits you . you can visit primary health centers in your area if you are wondering where to get one.
Nb: postinor 1 or postinor 2 is an emergency oral contraceptive and shouldn’t be used as a continuous form of contraception.

Smoking and pregnancy 2

image

Smoking and pregnancy post continues and this post would be about the effects smoking can have on you and your baby.
Some of the effects smoking have  (including second hand and third hand smoke) on the mother include:
1)Ectopic pregnancy: it occurs when the fertilized egg implants itself outside of the uterus(womb) and begins to grow and such pregnancy cannot result in the birth of a baby. This is most applicable to women seeking to conceive either for the first time or for subsequent other pregnancies .
2) Low lying placenta : this is when the placenta lies very low in the uterus thereby blocking all or part of the cervix , the cervix is the opening to the uterus.
It also has other effects such as vaginal bleeding and still birth .
These conditions affect the outcome of pregnancy and if not well managed have negative implications during pregnancy and labor.

What effects will smoking have on your baby?
Firstly the chemicals gotten from smoking lessen the amount of oxygen your baby gets and oxygen is very important for helping your baby grow healthy. It also causes your baby to weigh less than he should throughout pregnancy.
Babies can also be born with birth defects like cleft lip or cleft palate .
Smoking is also known to be one of the leading causes of preterm birth.
……..So next time there is a party at home avoid the cooking area the smoke is bad for you and your baby.

“Smokers are liable to die young” that is heard everyday by people but it is still posing a problem in the society today Smoking is particularly bad for you in pregnancy, it can cause serious health conditions such as cancer of the lungs. Apart from it being a cause of cancer, smoking before pregnancy makes it more difficult for you to get pregnant.
Smoking when pregnant is bad for both you and your baby. When you smoke you pass harmful chemicals such as nicotine to your baby through the placenta and umbilical cord which can cause health conditions.
Some would say “well I don’t smoke how does this concern me” well it does because there are other ways by which these harmful chemical substances  from smoke can get into your body without actively smoking . It is called passive smoking and there are two ways in which it occurs : second hand smoke  and third hand smoke .

Second-hand smoke
Second-hand smoke is the smoke you breathe in from someone else’s cigarette. In other words being around people that smoke is bad for you and the baby. It can cause your baby to be born with a low birth weight.

image

Third-hand smoke
Third- hand smoke is what is left behind from tobacco and cigarette smoke. It could be carbon monoxide or lead. It is the residual smell that is left on the clothes of people that smoke. Mothers who use cooking stoves the smoke that comes when you use water to kill the fire is carbon monoxide that smoke is unhealthy for you and your baby. This smoke can cause asthma, breathing problems or learning disorders for your baby.
So today avoid smoke get good fresh air and you and your baby would turn out healthy .
